Targeted Business-to-Business
Direct Marketing Having started your own business, you know it’s hard to get your company name and story known. You also know how hard it can be to bring in new business – something all businesses need to succeed. Targeted direct marketing helps get your story out to a select group of companies, builds credibility, and ultimately brings in new business! Weaving together strategies and techniques from public relations, direct mail, email and telemarketing can help you create a strong, cohesive new business campaign. The steps I use for my campaigns are similar to networking – you want people to get to know you and your business. The more people that know you and your business, the better your chances are of getting business. Because direct marketing can be expensive you can’t hit everyone, so you need to focus on companies that will want or need your products or services. It’s important to understand… it’s better to hit the right audience with a good message several times than it is to hit an uncertain group with the best copy and graphic design. Researching the right people to contact is important. If you’re not sure who you should talk to, plan on contacting a high-level executive who can put you in touch with the right person. After that you’ll want to write a couple of letters and emails. At the beginning of each letter/email, you need to WOW them. You need to introduce yourself and tell them why you are the best at what you do. How do you WOW them? By differentiating yourself from everyone else that does what you do. Everyone has competition, and it’s important to realize this. You need to be able to communicate why you are great at what you do. After sending out a series of letters and emails, take the time to make a follow-up phone call. By this time, the people you’re contacting should recognize your name and company name. It’s not a cold call – at least, I don’t think so. Talk to people to see if there’s any interest in your products or services. The information you receive from talking with potential prospects is extremely valuable, and you can use it to help improve your business. If possible, send out samples or brochures to the targeted group of people. This allows people to learn more about you and your company. After that, follow up with a call asking if they’ve received your "additional information". It’s a great way to get a conversation going. If the potential prospects aren’t around, leave a message. It’s just another way for you to get your name and company name in front of them. It gives you another chance to let them know you have a real business with products or services they can use. Consistent follow up throughout the campaign is as important as hitting the right audience. Usually, the potential prospects don’t know you or your company. By getting your name and story in front of them in a 3 to 6 month time period and by varying the ways you contact them (mail, email, phone calls); you are creating a strong, cohesive marketing campaign that differentiates you from your competitors. Lastly, document all your work. The more details you have, the better prepared you’ll be to take the next steps in bringing in new business. |

New member Lori Rohleder of Barefoot Books www.mybarefootbooks.com would like to include a huge thank you to Beth Sobiloff, Birchwood Enterprises www.birchwoodenterprises.com. Lori "joined the Network in January, but just recently made the time to become an active member. Beth graciously agreed to be my mentor. During our first meeting, she gave me so many fabulous ideas on how to really get the most out of my membership. On her suggestions I'm going to join the Membership Committee. During our initial chat, Beth mentioned that (in addition to her web services) she makes and decorates birthday cakes under the name Earthmom Cakes. Having children with severe food allergies, I recognized her name from her work at Scalliwags (a popular hangout for young children). Well, Beth agreed to make a birthday cake for our sons' 10th birthday party. He has many, very severe food allergies and has never had a 'real' bakery-style birthday cake. Beth created a gorgeous and delicious cake, complete with lacrosse sticks as decorations. Andrew was thrilled! I could not be more pleased with my mentor! You never know who you will meet in the Network!" Jill Flynne of Jill Flynne Designs www.jillflynnedesigns.com wants to say thank you to the various SSWBN members who came to Jill’s Open Studio In-Home Party on Nov.12, including Jane Ford of Melaleuca www.melaleuca.com, Rosemarie Lanchester of Send-Out Cards www.sendoutcards.com, and Trisha Mahan (assistant to Caroline Kennedy, Derby Street Shoppes, www.srweiner.com). Jill also wishes to thank Terry Anderson, Mayflower Cleanpro www.mayflowercleanpro.com "for
another wonderful job cleaning my sofas for the holidays." Jane Ford of Melaleuca www.melaleuca.com wants
to thank Stacey Shipman of Let It Flow www.letitflowfitness.com "for
working with me to create a holiday season workout program that is actually
fun to do and resulting in increased energy for me these days." Finally,
I would like to say Thank You to Jayne Pelosi of Renaissance
Interior Design www.renaissanceinteriordesign.com for
doing such a great job of getting folks to place ads in the SSWBN Directory,
