Jan Hellew, PC Guru Computer Tutor

The 5 second commute — work from home or wherever you are!

Whether you are working from home, the local coffee shop, a client’s office, or the cybercafé in Hawaii, technology makes it possible. Jan Hellew, owner of PC GURU showed SSWBN members how to make your job easier using the technology available today. She helped sort through all the pros and cons of some of the leading technology. And she geared the workshop to a level everyone could understand, even the technology challenged! She explained the technology and the defined some of the common language, and terms.
Jan Hellew presented a number of free solutions for the home user and business user and gave away CDs of the free programs available for cleaning adware, spyware, viruses, and the free open office for creating documents, brochures and business cards. She used a PowerPoint presentation and gave each participant a copy of the PowerPoint presentation.

Lots of questions were asked about keeping the computer virus free. An explanation of viruses and the different kinds of free tools available to keep your computer clean. Microsoft provides a free scanner for malware as well as a free firewall so you don’t need to purchase expensive programs that come loaded on your computer when you buy it, and then expire within 90 days.
Jan gave her opinion on the best programs to have to protect your computer, based on her 10 years of experience, surprisingly, the free programs were better then the purchased programs!

Some of the questions answered were regarding the basic tools for a home or mobile office:

  • Do I need a Desktop Computer or a Laptop?
  • Getting connected –cable, DSL, dial-up, oh my!
  • How does Wireless Work? What security do I need?
  • What hardware do I need? And what is hardware?
  • Do I need to spend hundreds of dollars for software or can I use the free Open Office?
  • How do I get Access to my files on the road?
  • How to Burn a CD and use MP3 players, Palms, and Flash drives for fun and profit.
  • How do I Stay in Touch Instant messaging E-mail
