office, or the cybercafé in Hawaii, technology makes it possible.
Jan Hellew, owner of PC GURU showed SSWBN members how to make your job
easier using the technology available today. She helped sort through
all the pros and cons of some of the leading technology. And she geared
the workshop to a level everyone could understand, even the technology
challenged! She explained the technology and the defined some of the
common language, and terms. Lots of questions
were asked about keeping the computer virus free. An explanation of viruses
and the different kinds of free tools available to keep your computer
clean. Microsoft provides a free scanner for malware as well as a free
firewall so you don’t need to purchase expensive
programs that come loaded on your computer when you buy it, and then
expire within 90 days. Some of the questions answered were regarding the basic tools for a home or mobile office:
About Jan Hellew Janis Hellew has operated her business, PC-GURU COMPUTER TUTOR from home since 2000. She has been consulting from home since 1995. Computer and internet guru Janis Hellew, has over ten years experience providing training, technical support, technical writing, and network management to women seeking to maximize the power of the Internet. She has worked for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and the National Resource Center in Harrisburg PA. She has facilitated a national forum on developing telecommunications networks and created the Violence Against Women Internet site, http://Vawnet.org with a team of national experts. Janis created a network which connects all the battered women shelters in the state to facilitate emergency services to woman and children. She trained the staff of each shelter on utilizing the computers and the internet. She created the Massachusetts domestic violence site http://janedoe.org and manage a team of experts to develop an internet presence for domestic violence through a grant from AOL and other companies. She created the keyword "domestic violence" site on AOL. Janis has presented at numerous state and national conferences including the National Governors Conference and has taught workshops on using the internet, and computer-internet skills in Denver, New Orleans, Pittsburg, DC. and elsewhere. She published a paper entitled, " Creating a safety net for women and children using technology." Janis Hellew is the owner of PC GURU Computer Tutor which provides computer repair, technical support, network management and website design since 2000. Susan Hammond is a 2006 recipient of The President’s Call to Action Award (www.presidentialserviceawards.gov) which recognizes individuals with over 4,000 hours of lifetime community service. The award acknowledges Susan’s work as a co-founder of both the South Shore Women’s Business Network and the Center for Women & Enterprise, her role as chair of the Duxbury Council on Aging and involvement with the Fuller Craft Museum, New England’s home for contemporary craft. The award further recognizes her role as a past and present board member and volunteer with area non-profits in particular Hingham Symphony Orchestra and the Arts & Business Council/Boston. Susan is Principal of CFO Strategies. Susan thanks Paula & Bill Harris of WH Cornerstone Investments for nominating her for this award. Laura Willis of Willis-Works Communications was given a certificate by the South Shore Elder Services and an official U.S. House of Representatives certificate of appreciation from Congressman Delahunt's office for her "outstanding services to the South Shore Elder Services" for the design of their promotional brochures.
