Greetings & Happy Spring!

Each month we feature a "Partner piece". This is an informational segment from one of our partners that we can all learn from. This Month’s "partner piece" comes from Donna Toma-Lawlor of George Washington Toma TV & Appliance.

February 17, 2009: Are You ready?

For over 55 years, George Washington Toma TV & Appliance, Inc. has been a leader on the South Shore in providing Home Entertainment products to you and your family. This fact sheet is part of our ongoing commitment to help educate you about the transition to all-digital broadcasting.

The Biggest Change Since Color TV
By law, American television stations will end all analog (traditional) broadcasts on February 17, 2009 and begin broadcasting digital signal exclusively. Television sets connected to cable, satellite or a telephone company video service provider should not be affected. But TV sets that rely on over the air antennas and do not have a built-in digital tuner will need a converter box to continue receiving and displaying broadcast TV after the transition occurs.

Why is America Switching to Digital Television (DTV)?
Digital is a more efficient way to broadcast, and it will free up the airwaves for other services, including Public Safety. DTV also provides clearer pictures, more channels, and free over the air HDTV for consumers with High Definition TV sets.

How Do I Switch to DTV?
There are three options to help you transition to DTV:

  • Purchase a Digital Television set with a built-in Digital Tuner. All TV’s with a digital tuner are able to receive current and future digital broadcasts from local television stations.
  • Subscribe to a video service provider. Cable, Satellite or a Telephone Company video service will allow you to continue using your current analog TV, and will also function with a new TV when it needs to be replaced.
  • Purchase a DTV Converter Box. Early in 2008, these will become available for use with your current analog TV. They will no longer be needed when your TV needs to be replaced.

Connections by Kristen Ford-Hernandez

Hello everyone,

I am so excited to be taking over the Connections piece of the newsletter.  Thank you to Lois Wood for doing such a wonderful job and for handing off the reigns to me.

This column is a true testament of how great the network is and how much actual  networking goes on.  It’s a fantastic way to say ‘thank you’ or “job well done” to a deserving member.  Whether you’ve collaborated with a fellow member, or want to thank one, please take a moment to share it with the network.  Now on with the connections...

Judy Rodriguez would like to send out a few thank-you’s on behalf of Watch All.  First to Brenda Wornum-Moore, from BWM Consulting, for conducting a training seminar for the Watch All staff. Brenda made the seminar very interactive and the many staff who participated came away with some very useful information.

And, to Lois Wood of Lois Wood Communications for assisting with the design of  Watch All’s new banner. It looks great!  Lastly, a big ‘thank-you’ to Image Resolutions in Norwell for printing the banner.  Watch All will display the banner with pride!

Kathleen Teehan of PI Worldwide would like to thank Craig and Alison Guido of Almar Builders.  They recently completed a bathroom remodel for Kathleen and it came out beautifully.  Almar’s carpenter, Mark, is incredibly talented and very methodical and detail oriented in his workmanship. It looks great!

I would like to thank Janet Laberge of Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap.  Premiere Pros hired DDDC to pick up and remove some debris from a roofing job.  Janet was expeditious and very reasonably priced.  Our customer commented on what a dynamo she was. Thank you so much Janet.  We have more jobs coming your way!  I also want to thank Janet Doyle of Professional Bookkeeping Services.  She helped Premiere Pros tremendously by getting us on the right track with maintaining our books!

Please remember to send me any and all ‘connections’ you’ve made and I’ll be sure to include it in next month’s newsletter.  Thanks to all who submitted entries. I look forward to seeing you at the next SSWBN event.  Til then…. Happy Networking!
